Pirates of the Caribbean movie starring Margot Robbie has been scrapped.

Updated: Dec 7, 2022

Disney reportedly scrapped Margot Robbie's female-led Pirates of the Caribbean reboot film starring Birds of Prey author Christina Hodson.

Margot Robbie reveals that her Pirates of the Caribbean reboot has been canceled by Disney. Having established herself as a franchise-ready star with her role as Harley Quinn in the DCU, Robbie in 2020 was reported to be replacing the problematic Johnny Depp as the lead of Pirates of the Caribbean 6. As late as May 2022, the planned Robbie-led reboot movie still looked like it had a chance, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that two different POTC 6 scripts were in the works.

Now there’s been a new update on the status of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 at Disney, and it’s bad news for fans of Robbie and her potential female-led reboot. As the star herself revealed to Vanity Fair, Disney is no longer going forward with the idea she had been involved in developing along with Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson.

Check out Robbie’s remark on the subject in the space below:

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

What Would Robbie's POTC Spinoff Have Been About?

Specific plot details about Pirates of the Caribbean 6 have obviously been kept under wraps and will remain that way for the time-being. All Robbie ever said publicly about her and Hodson’s take on the project was that it would be more of a “girl power” movie, and would bring “a very key female element to that world.” The most important female element would of course have been Robbie, who proved with her Harley Quinn performance that she is able to light up the screen playing a complicated and dynamic lead character in an action-heavy franchise.

Given the supernatural element that is always key to Pirates, it’s certain that ghosts and monsters would’ve gotten involved alongside Robbie. The other thing that can be said for certain about Robbie’s Pirates take is that Depp’s Jack Sparrow would not have been part of the show. Most likely, the plan would have been for Robbie to play not a gender-swapped Jack Sparrow, but an entirely new character who possessed many of the same characteristics as Depp’s iconic Pirates hero.

Robbie’s Pirates also certainly would have introduced several other strong female characters around the star, creating a sort of pirate-themed Birds of Prey, with Hodson hopefully bringing to the story the same combination of wit and heart that she unleashed on Robbie’s 2020 DCU movie. Robbie’s new Pirates of the Caribbean 6 update of course does not mean that there will never be another Pirates movie at Disney. But it does appear to mean that Robbie’s own take on the franchise is now canceled forever, which is certainly bad news for those who were looking forward to watching the star swig some rum and ham it up on the high seas.
