Early in his adulthood, Luang felt a calling to embark on a spiritual journey and contemplated becoming a monk. However, the allure of marriage beckoned him, and he decided to pursue family life instead. Together with his devoted wife, Luang raised six children, finding fulfillment in their love and companionship.

Yet, the fire of his childhood aspiration to become a monk continued to smolder within Luang. When his children had all grown and he reached the age of 50, he made a life-changing decision. Determined to honor his long-forgotten dream, Luang left behind his worldly possessions and embraced the robes of a Buddhist monk.

Initially serving as an abbot at a temple in southern Thailand, Luang soon returned to Wat Khunaram, located near his cherished childhood home. It was here that he embarked on a remarkable spiritual practice known as Sokushinbutsu—self mummification. In this arduous process, the body is intentionally preserved through extreme asceticism and meditation.

Tragically, it was during one of his meditative sessions in 1973 that Luang Pho Daeng attained enlightenment and passed away. However, his story does not end there. Today, his mummified body rests within the hallowed grounds of Wat Khunaram on Ko Samui island in Thailand's Surat Thani Province.

What sets this unique display apart is not just the awe-inspiring preservation of Luang's remains but the surprising addition of sunglasses adorning his face. These spectacles were thoughtfully placed by caretakers to conceal the decomposed eye sockets, allowing visitors to experience the exhibit without feeling too unnerved.
