The municipality of Amsterdam will close the Weesperstraat, one of the busiest roads in the city, to car traffic for six weeks.

This is a controversial measure that aims to investigate the impact on traffic, safety, air quality, noise, and residents' perception. From June 12 to July 23, the street will be closed to cars between 06:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., along with three surrounding streets to prevent "cut-through traffic."


Emergency services and all destinations will still be accessible, but travel time may be longer. The municipality expects the area to be congested for the first two weeks.


This experiment, which has been planned for years, has faced opposition from some residents and taxi drivers who believe it will cause traffic chaos and interfere with their work.


Amsterdam has been working towards becoming a car-free city due to projected population growth. The closure will be evaluated, and the results will be presented to the city council in November.
