10 Interesting Things You Never Knew About Bread



1. Mankind has been eating a baked combination of flour and water since at least 10,000BC.


2. In the UK, men eat about 4 ounces (113 grams) of bread a day, and for women it’s 2.7oz (76 grams).


3. The first bread-maker was invented by freed Roman slave Marcus Virgilius Euryasaces in the first century. Powered by a donkey or horse walking in circles, it kneaded dough in a basin.

5. Artophagous means ‘bread-eating’. Artolatry is bread-worship.


6. Pan de Campo (also called ‘Cowboy Bread’) was designated the Official Bread of Texas in 2005.
